THE MUSIC -- There is none better in town than this small ensemble of musicians who masterfully perform the Oliver! score. The bold and often soft notes rise up from the orchestra pit into the humid night air and transform the amphitheatre into the old streets of London. If not for the music, what would Oliver! be? It would definitely not be the display of talent currently showing at the Iroquois Amphitheatre.
Once again, I must say that Louisville has an immense array of talented actors, singers and musicians. The actors truly were the characters they portrayed. Every part was flawless, from the dancing and bellowing of Bumble (Bo Cecil), the sneaky underhandedness of Fagin (Matt Orme) and the sweet innocence of Oliver (Connor Holloway) to the delightful singing and dancing of the ensemble. As one patron, Hollis James, commented, "I loved the costuming, sets, live orchestra, and the singing was wonderful." The audience seemed to agree. The production was the perfect, classical interpretation of Dickens' Oliver Twist, which tells the tale of an orphan turned pickpocket. Whether you have not seen Oliver! or you are a huge fan, the ampitheatre is the ultimate setting in which to watch. If you are familiar with the play, keep in mind that although brilliantly choreographed and true to the script, the directing lacks a bit of creativity.
