"...for the rest of her life." Well, the quote really goes like this: "My son is my son until he takes himself a wife, but my daughter's my daughter for the rest of her life." This was one of the closing lines of the play, Father of the Bride, which is currently at Derby Dinner Playhouse in Clarksville, IN. This show is kicking off the playhouse's 34th season, and it fits right in with the kick-off of the wedding season. That line also exemplifies the spirit of the show and of the night — apprehension of the future, reflection of the past, and presentations of present-day love.
As we walked over to our table, it was impossible not to notice the beautiful set, courtesy of scenic designer Lee Buckholz. From our table, the 1955 Midwest décor had a very homey feel under Ron Breedlove's lighting design. My wife and I were fortunate to have a four-top that we shared with two very lovely ladies. As not to embarrass them, and because I didn't get their permission to use their names, I'll just refer to them as Josh's mom and grandmother. Getting to know these ladies made the evening even more enjoyable. This show explores that wonderful period of time that those of us who are married refer to as the "pre-nuptial" period. This is the period that deals with meeting the parents, planning the wedding, going from 50 to more than 400 guests, dealing with the wedding planner, and of course the nervousness and second-guessing of ourselves. Father of the Bride gives us the chance to relive those moments, or for those of you who have not experienced it yet, gives you something to look forward to. The cast was great. Mr. Banks (David Myers) was definitely the glue that held the group together, but it didn't take much adhesive because Bekki Jo Schneider has once more put together a superstar cast. A night filled with good food and good times is what you will be in store for when you see this show. Missing this season's opener would not be advised, and you can take that from me, a father — and Father knows best!!
