Attention Playwrights!

Start your typewriters! The Kentucky Theatre Association's New Play Award submission period is open until August 15, 2009. The playwright must be either a current or former resident of Kentucky. If you have expatriated, you must have lived here for at least three years. There is no entrance fee and no age or previous experience limitations.

Plays can be comedies, dramas, farces, or anything in between. But whatever you do, don't submit a musical!

Three finalists will be announced on October 15th, 2009. They will be invited to attend the 2009 conference at Morehead State University, with a selected stage reading presented for each finalist. The winner will be announced at the KTA Fall Conference Awards Ceremony Saturday, November 14th, 2009.

$250, an award plaque, and loads of publicity go to the winning playwright. All finalists will be offered a free hotel night in Morehead and free registration to the conference. For details, please see The Kentucky Theatre Association's website.

How Many Have You Seen?

Theatre Communications Group lists the top ten most produced plays (excluding A Christmas Carol and works by Shakespeare) by its member organizations by year, according to a survey it conducted last October. Here are the 2008-09 results (with the number of productions in parentheses). How many of them have you seen?

  • Doubt by John Patrick Shanley (14)
  • The Santaland Diaries adapted by Joe Mantello from David Sedaris (14)
  • Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire (13)
  • The Seafarer by Conor McPherson (12)
  • Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl (11)
  • To Kill a Mockingbird adapted by Christopher Sergel from Harper Lee (10)
  • The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams (9)
  • Souvenir by Stephen Temperley (9)
  • Mauritius by Theresa Rebeck (9)
  • Noises Off by Michael Frayn (8)
  • Radio Golf by August Wilson (8)

How does Louisville stack up to the national scene? Unless I'm mistaken, we saw productions of only two of these in the 2008-09 season (Doubt at Actors Theatre, Rabbit Hole at Bunbury). Is this a good thing, or not? Do we want to follow trends, or set our own? Or are we content to see the same shows year after year? Take a look at past reviews for the answer to that question. How do companies decide what their audiences want to see? I don't have the answer to that one. I simply throw this information out for your consideration.

Go to the Theatre Communications Group's website to see what was hot in previous years, and count how many of these popular shows you've seen.

And could someone please explain to me why Louisville audiences have yet to see The Pillowman?

Has Susan Pope Lost Her Head?

Sometimes I think I lead a charmed life. In fact, I know I do. During my stay at the Kentucky Foundation for Women's Hopscotch House this week, I was privileged to share the space with Susan Pope, along with two other women. Pope, a Danville theatre professional, was cooped up for long hours in the chicken coop studio, ironing out the details of her one-woman show, Dreadfully White (love that title!). Over the kitchen table, however, we had some interesting chats about life and art. For the rest of the story, go here.

    Rand Harmon Relocates to Colorado
It saddens us to report that Specific Gravity Ensemble's co-founders Rand and Barb Harmon are leaving Louisville. Rand's going after his Ph.D in Boulder, CO and the couple are pulling up stakes immediately for Mork & Mindy's hometown. Watch for reminiscences of SGE's glorious times here soon, as well as an interview with Rand about the past, the present, and most importantly, the future.
